Reminder from ITS about phishing scams in email
Information Technology Services reminds the Penn State community that phishing scams will arrive in their e-mail, with new variations daily which appear to be from e-mail or IT administration and from well-known banks. Such phishing scams attempt to trick users into surrendering personal information such as account passwords. The most effective e-mail filtering will usually send these to junk, but some do sneak past filters to the Inbox.
Penn State will never ask its access account users, and banks will never ask their customers, for their password. Some may contain a link to a very credible but fake web site. Others request a reply by e-mail. Do not reply – simply delete these scam messages. Responding to these messages can lead to the compromise of your access account, your computer, or your data.
If you have already replied to one of these fraudulent messages, please contact ITS Security Operations and Services at (814) 863-9533.
For assistance with e-mail filtering, departmental users should contact their IT support staff. Others may contact the ITS Helpdesks:
