Network Border Router Upgrades

ITS will be upgrading the network border routers in July in order to prepare Penn State for future increases in bandwidth capacity to the Internet. The upgrade will occur during the mornings of Thursday, July 9 and Thursday, July 16, between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, with one of the border routers being replaced each morning. We expect this work to take approximately 1 hour, during which University Internet connectivity is expected to remain operational, but without redundant capabilities.

During the morning of July 9, the University’s Internet connectivity and VoIP service at University Park will experience a brief – less than 30 seconds – disruption while traffic switches to the available service connection.

On the morning of July 16, the University’s Internet connectivity will again be briefly disrupted, for the same reasons as on July 9. Services provided via Internet2, except XSEDE and AL2S (Big Ten Network), will be unavailable the duration of the work – one hour. University Park’s VoIP service will NOT experience any impact during this morning.

After each router is replaced, testing will occur to ensure services are functional and redundancy has been restored.

If you are a ServiceNow user, you can view the change record for each night: CHG0032447 (July 9) and CHG0032448 (July 16).
