Quantum ‘hack’ to unleash computing power

The building blocks of quantum computers — qubits — are highly unstable and prone to error. Building tolerance to such error is a major hurdle in scaling up practical quantum computers. Now physicists have found that modifying qubit surface codes can improve quantum error correction by up to 400 percent.
